WJM Design & Build was founded in 2009 with a clear purpose: to bring creativity, integrity, and care to the world of construction - an industry too often defined by compromise.
Proudly rooted in Cheshire, we work across some of the county’s most desirable postcodes. From the quiet elegance of Prestbury & Macclesfield, through the heart of Alderley Edge & Wilmslow and on to the refined quarters of Manchester city centre. Every commission is delivered with precision, discretion, and an uncompromising eye for detail.
Laying the Foundations
WJM Design & Build was shaped by a creative legacy passed down, not through instruction but through years of quiet osmosis.
Founder Wil Mainwaring grew up in a household where design and creativity were part of everyday life.
His father, an interior architect, would draft plans at the drawing board or sketch ideas into a notepad to the comforting murmur of Radio 4.
Wil often sat nearby, drawn in by the calm focus and the soft rhythm of pencil on paper.
Those moments didn’t feel like lessons, but they laid a foundation. One that still shapes the way WJM works today.
After earning a degree in Creative Arts, Wil moved between music, property and hands on trades, undertaking a broad spectrum of creative work that shaped his eye and deepened his understanding of space and rhythm. But it was building that offered the kind of grounded creativity he couldn’t shake, the pull toward something lasting and tactile.
So, while working full-time on site, Wil also studied in the evenings to complete a City & Guilds in carpentry & joinery.
That blend of creative training, practical experience and a lifelong respect for design now forms the backbone of WJM’s approach:

We contacted WJM late last year having been recommended by one of their previous clients. From the first point of contact to the completion of the project, communication was excellent.
